Hiralal Jekisundas Kania was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, serving from 1950 to 1951. The Article 124 of the Constitution of India provides for the establishment of the Supreme Court and the appointment of its Chief Justice. Kania died while in office on 6 November 1951. He was succeeded by M Patanjali Sastri.
